Skills for a Shared Future: Aspen’s Learnership Programme creates pathway for people with disabilities Opening doors to learning, confidence and meaningful workplace experience

Every meaningful career begins with an opportunity - the opportunity to learn, to be supported, to gain confidence and to be recognised for one’s potential.
World Youth Skills Day SM 2026

As we reflect on World Youth Skills Day, commemorated on 15 July under the theme“Skills for a Shared Future,” we are reminded that building future-ready talent is not only about developing technical capability. It is also about creating inclusive pathways where young people, including people with disabilities, can access learning, gain practical workplace experience and contribute with purpose.

At Aspen, this commitment is reflected through Group Human Capital’s Persons with Disabilities Learnership Programme, delivered in partnership with Bradshaw Le Roux. The programme demonstrates Aspen’s ongoing commitment to building an inclusive and equitable workplace by creating meaningful development opportunities for people with disabilities across South Africa.

Implemented across Aspen’s South African Business Units, the 12-month workplace-based programme gives 28 learners valuable practical exposure in areas such as Group Digital Technology, Finance, Administration and other functional disciplines. It also enables participants to work towards accredited qualifications, helping to strengthen both their confidence and their employability.

Beyond supporting employment equity and transformation objectives, the programme enriches workplace diversity, strengthens a culture of inclusion and belonging, and creates sustainable pathways to future employment and career growth for participants.

For Aspen, inclusion is about more than access to a programme. It is about creating an environment where learners feel respected, supported and empowered to contribute, while bringing fresh perspectives, resilience and curiosity into our teams. When people are given the right support and opportunity, their talent can flourish, and our organisation becomes stronger because of it.

As part of our World Youth Skills Day reflection, we spoke to some of our learners about their experiences and the skills they are developing. Their stories remind us that a shared future is built when organisations invest in people, remove barriers and create space for every individual to grow, contribute and succeed.
