For me, continuous learning is not simply about completing a course or earning a qualification. It is a mindset: the humility to accept that none of us know everything, the curiosity to ask better questions, and the generosity to pass knowledge on.
Learning beyond textbooks: the UKZN Legal Workshop
One initiative I am particularly proud of is our Annual UKZN Group Legal Workshop. What began eleven years ago as a modest idea has grown into a signature learning experience, giving selected final-year law students practical insight into how a legal function operates inside a multinational pharmaceutical business.
The workshop connects business, education and community by bridging academic learning with workplace expectations. Students are exposed to the realities of commercial legal practice, from contract drafting, intellectual property and litigation to ethics, judgement, stakeholder management and the evolving role of in-house counsel.
What I value most is that learning moves out of the textbook and into lived experience. Students engage with Aspen lawyers, ask questions, test their understanding and see how legal principles are applied in real business decisions.
The learning is never one-directional. Each year, students’ questions sharpen our thinking and remind us of our responsibility to use knowledge well, create access and open doors for those coming after us. In that sense, the workshop is not only about developing future lawyers; it also strengthens our own culture of mentorship, reflection and service.
From exposure to opportunity: Aspen’s Legal Internship Programme
Exposure matters, but opportunity matters just as much. Through Aspen’s Legal Internship Programme and related candidate attorney pathway, we help promising young law graduates move from qualification into professional practice.
What matters to me is that this development goes beyond technical legal training. The programme gives selected graduates exposure to Aspen, mentorship from the Legal team, and insight into the professional behaviours that shape a successful career.
The programme also extends its impact by giving selected graduates the opportunity to complete their articles at a local law firm, with their stipends fully funded by Aspen throughout this period.
This is where continuous learning becomes very real: a student gains insight, stays connected, enters an internship or articles pathway, receives mentorship and moves closer to becoming an admitted legal practitioner. Learning, when properly supported, becomes opportunity.
Learning as a discipline: Continuous Legal Development sessions
Within Group Legal, continuous learning must be part of how we work, not something we turn to only when time allows. Our Continuous Legal Development sessions are planned and diarised, giving team members the opportunity to research, present and discuss legal and business topics with colleagues.
Topics range from case studies and commercial developments to practical tools, business knowledge and process improvements. A strong legal team is built not only on individual expertise, but on shared knowledge, standards and understanding of the business.
Leadership learning across Aspen: Aspire, Activate, Ascend and Accelerate
Continuous learning is also essential to leadership development. Aspen’s leadership programmes, Aspire, Activate, Ascend and Accelerate, recognise that people need structured development at different career stages, and that leadership capability is built progressively over time.
For Group Legal, this matters. Our role requires more than sound legal advice. We must be trusted business aligned value adding partners who exercise sound judgement, communicate clearly, influence constructively and help the business make informed decisions in a complex and uncertain environment.
A culture that learns, teaches and grows
The more I grow in my career, the more convinced I become that learning is also an act of humility. It reminds us that no one person has all the answers, that expertise must be refreshed, and that the strongest teams are generous with knowledge.
Across the UKZN Legal Workshop, the Legal Internship Programme, our Continuous Legal Development sessions and Aspen’s broader leadership programmes, the common thread is clear: people grow when they are given access, structure, challenge and support.
For Group Legal, continuous learning is how we strengthen capability, support future talent and contribute to the communities we serve. Ultimately, it is about remaining curious, relevant and prepared, while helping others do the same. We grow and learn as a team and none of the above would be possible with our innovative high energy dedicate legal team.
