For more than 30 years, the NBI has brought business leaders together around some of South Africa’s most pressing development and competitiveness challenges. This roundtable formed part of a broader series of closed-door engagements led by NBI CEO Shameela Soobramoney, together with the NBI Board and executives from member companies, with a shared focus on moving beyond dialogue towards stronger alignment, deeper partnerships and coordinated action.
With active engagement led by our Group Sustainability Team, the discussion explored the systemic risks and opportunities facing the country, including energy and water security, climate finance, skills development and long-term competitiveness.
We were also pleased to welcome Khule Duma, Portfolio Lead for Programmes and Partnerships in the Private Office of the President, to the roundtable who shared valuable perspectives on how business and government can work together more effectively to create impact at scale.
Speaking on the importance of such gatherings, Shameela Soobramoney highlighted that sustainability is not a sideshow, but central to how we build the country, strengthen resilience, and create foundations for inclusive long-term economic growth. She emphasised that the real opportunity lies in collective action to drive systemic change.
Our Group Chief Financial Officer, Sean Capazorio, who represented Aspen and welcomed delegates to our offices, also reflected on the importance of creating space for practical, solutions-focused dialogue, and for building the partnerships needed to turn ambition into action.
