Hosted by the Health Funders Association (HFA) in early September, the annual symposium brought together leaders and experts from across South African healthcare to consider some of the most pressing questions shaping the country’s health system. A key highlight of the engagement was the launch of HFA’s inaugural State of Medical Schemes Report, which provides an evidence-based view of the medical schemes sector, the pressures it faces, and the reforms that could help strengthen access, affordability, and sustainability.
Stavros’ participation reflected Aspen’s ongoing commitment to contributing meaningfully to healthcare policy dialogue, particularly where this supports improved access to quality, affordable medicines, and stronger, more resilient healthcare systems. As one of Africa’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers, Aspen continues to play an active role in conversations that bring together government, funders, providers, and industry to explore practical solutions to complex healthcare challenges.
The symposium explored the difficult balance facing the sector: rising medical costs, affordability pressures on members, and the need to extend financial protection to more South Africans. Discussions also highlighted the important role medical schemes play when unexpected health events occur, from neonatal and emergency care to cancer treatment, lengthy hospital admissions, and access to high-cost medicines.
For Aspen, these themes are closely aligned with the Group’s purpose of improving the health and quality of life of patients. The discussions reinforced the importance of sustainable healthcare funding models, responsible pricing, investment in local manufacturing capability and stronger collaboration across the public and private sectors to help broaden access while protecting the long-term viability of healthcare systems.
Stavros’ presence at the symposium added an important Aspen voice to the broader national conversation on healthcare access, sustainability, and reform. His engagement underscored the value of industry participation in shaping solutions that are practical, evidence-based, and responsive to the realities facing patients, funders, and healthcare providers.
The launch of the State of Medical Schemes Report provided a valuable foundation for these conversations, bringing together new data, sector perspectives, and actuarial modelling on reforms such as risk equalisation and mandatory medical scheme cover. It also highlighted opportunities for regulatory and funding reforms that could help reduce member contribution costs and support broader access to primary healthcare.
Through participation in forums such as the HFA Scenario Planning Symposium, Aspen continues to support constructive dialogue and partnership across the healthcare ecosystem. These platforms are essential in helping to identify shared priorities, build consensus and advance approaches that can strengthen healthcare access, affordability, and resilience for more South Africans.
