To mark the end of International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Aspen Pharmacare sponsored a Go gold for kids with cancer event on 28 September 2018 at the newly opened Paediatric Oncology Ward at the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital (PEPH).

Local community members and families of children who have been impacted by the dreaded disease spent the day honouring and remembering those affected by cancer, and rallied together to raise awareness of the early warning signs of childhood cancer.

The PEPHs medical team shared that many patients with childhood cancers have much higher survival rates when diagnosed early. Unfortunately the signs are sometimes overlooked or mistakenly associated with other common diseases.

Brave childhood cancer survivors boldly shared their stories of how they beat the disease and thanked the medical team for their care and support.

The event concluded with a reveal of a painting created by a local primary school pupil emphasising ‘sometimes real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles’. This painting will be displayed in the entrance of the ward as reminder of all the childhood cancer superheroes.
