An Aspen Group initiative

World Environment Day (WED) is the biggest annual event hosted on 5 June for positive environmental action. June 2017 marked the first year that this campaign was rolled out to all manufacturing and commercial business units within the Aspen Group. The 2017 theme, “Connecting People to Nature,” as set by the United Nations, encouraged employees to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it.

Aspen initiatives included an invitation to all employees to make a positive difference to the environment by “Being the change and making a pledge.” This entailed taking a small idea and making it extraordinary for the benefit of a more sustainable Aspen, and ultimately, a more sustainable environment. Employees were also encouraged to capture nature through their own eyes by sharing and tagging their favourite photos “#withnature” as an expression of gratitude.

More than 80 photos were submitted and votes for the top ten pictures were conducted by representatives from the Group SHE, Group Risk & Sustainability and Governance and Ethics divisions. To show unity in celebrating WED, all employees were also requested to “Wear Green to be Seen” on 5 June.

Participation in WED was a reminder that individual actions can be harnessed and transformed into a collective power that has real and lasting impact on our planet – we can all make a difference!
